- NOTES (last updated by RAB 21-Feb-93)
-
- General: Most of the headings in the above table are probably self evident except for the following:
-
- Version/Yr: This refers (in most instances) to the most recent version and year of release; where it is known that
- specific RISC-OS 3 versions have been released, this is noted under 'Comments'.
-
- RISC-OS 'compatibility' was covered by Adrian Look's article in Archive 4.3 p11 which explained the main categories as:
- "RISC-OS Compliant - applications which run in the Desktop and closely follow the RISC-OS guidelines.
- RISC-OS Compatible - applications which can be loaded from the Desktop and have a quit option which returns
- the user to the Desktop with no change to the computer.
- RISC-OS Coexistant - applications which will run in a machine fitted with RISC-OS but which fit neither of
- the above categories." (Any unsaved work from other active applications should first be saved since, whilst
- a RISC-OS coexistant program can be launched from the Desktop, typically to exit such a program requires
- that the <Ctrl><Break> keys to be pressed.)
-
- Hard disc installation: Whilst many applications/programs can be freely installed on to a hard disc, copy protection is
- incorporated into a number of them. In some instances this means that they cannot be installed on to a hard
- disc at all. Where such installation is possible, protection may take two forms:
- 'Active' protection means that some action is required by the user to start the application/program. This
- covers such things as requiring the insertion of the original program disc as a "key disc", or reference to
- the original documentation to input a "colour chart" code reference or "password" consisting of a specific
- word or phrase.
- 'Passive' protection means that no such specific action is required to start the application/program. This
- covers such things as a hardware "dongle" (permanently fitted to the computer) or a unique registration
- number and/or name which is registered with the software publishers.
-
- A1: Whilst these adventure games created using Alpine Software's ALPS are essentially RISC-OS compatible, they do not revert to
- the default system font. Contained in the ALPS 'Resources' directory is a file called 'defaultchr'; this should first be
- copied into the game's own 'Resources' directory. The game's !Run file should then have the following line added at the end
- (ie. after the command to "Run <AlpsGame$Dir>.!RunImage"):
- %H2%Print <AlpsGame$Dir>.Resources.defaultchr
- (NB. This hint was provided by Philip Hawthorne of Alpine Software)
-
- A2: Whilst Alpine Software's adventure game element of 'Cyborg' is essentially RISC-OS compatible, it reverts to mode 15 rather
- than the default Desktop mode. To overcome this the following changes are required - in !Adventure.StartUp add a new line
- 65:
- %H2%OSCLI("SetEval WimpMode "+STR$(MODE))
- and in !Adventure.!RunImage delete (or REM out) line 90 and add a new line 115:
- %H2% WimpMode = FNRead_OSnumericvar("WimpMode")
- (NB. This hint was provided by Philip Hawthorne of Alpine Software)
-
- A3: Atomwide 'VIDCplus' software is used on my Acorn A5000 to provide Desktop mode 102 (and with the Taxan 795 monitor
- MonitorType MUST be set to 4 and Sync to 0). Since certain applications/games will not run with 'VIDCplus' loaded, I have
- created two Desktop !Boot files - one of which doesn't load 'VIDCplus' - and the appropriate one is re-named to !Boot when
- required.
-
- F1: These older games from The Fourth Dimension re-configure the System Sprites and produce an error message of "No memory in
- system sprite area", when run on my Acorn A5000 using a Desktop !Boot file. Rather than attempting to modify the !Run file
- for each game, I have found that the easiest approach is to type:
- %H2% Configure NoBoot
- at the command line (accessed by pressing Function key F12) and then press <Ctrl><Break>; before starting the game(s).
-
- F2: The Fourth Dimension's 'Pandora's Box' game appears to be incompatible with Acorn Computer's MIDI software (version 3.14).
- I have found that the easiest approach is to type:
- %H2% RMKill MIDI
- at the command line (accessed by pressing Function key F12); before starting the game. Alternatively the game's !Run file
- could be amended as appropriate.
-
- M1: These adventure games from Magnetic Scrolls will ONLY work with the supplied very old version (1.01) of the Shared C
- Library. The game's !Run file should be modified to first include a line:
- %H2%RMKill SharedCLibrary
- This deletes the RISC-OS 3 version, before loading the games's own version of the Shared C Library; two further lines should
- be added at the end of the !Run file:
- %H2% RMKill SharedCLibrary
- %H2% RMLoad SharedCLibrary
- This deletes the 'old' and re-instates the RISC-OS 3 version of the Shared C Library. (NB. It may also be advisable to first
- close down any other active applications that may be using the RISC-OS 3 Shared C Library before running these games.)
-
- M2: Earlier versions of Magnetic Scrolls' adventure game 'Wonderland' could not be successfully installed on to a SCSI hard
- disc. The hard disc installation program itself uses mode 16 which provides a corrupted screen display with my Taxan 795
- monitor.
-
- O1: The '!Genesis' program (part of Oak Solutions 'Genesis II' application) produces varying error messages if there are more
- than 16 fonts in any one font directory.
-
- P1: David Pilling's 'SparkFS' software is used on my Acorn A5000 to compress virtually all files contained on the internal IDE
- and external SCSI hard discs using the 'Spark dir' option (I found that Compression's multiple drive icons cluttered up the
- icon bar and their use can be somewhat confusing). However, certain games (including several of The Fourth Dimension's copy
- protected ones) will not run after having been compressed using 'SparkFS' - interestingly they all appear to run after being
- compressed using 'Compression'!
-
- Q1: Both versions of 'Quazer' insist that the Screem memory is set to exactly 160K. The Fourth Dimension/Impact Software version
- uses the 'MemAlloc' module to achieve this, but this doesn't work if the Screen memory is already above 160K. I have found
- that the easiest solution is to first change the Desktop mode to 15 from the 'Palette' Desktop icon.
-
- R1: The 'Droom' adventure game from Resource can cause problems if run from a SCSI hard disc and/or using a Desktop !Boot file.
- Its !Run file should be modified as follows. Firstly, to avoid 'killing' the SCSI filing modules, the "RMClear" command
- should be deleted. Secondly the 'memspace' module should not be used as this attempts to re-allocate SystemSize to 8K,
- RMASize to 80K, SpriteSize to 400K, and ScreenSize, FontSize & RAMSize all to 0K. Memory permitting, all that is required is
- to include appropriate lines in the !Run file to utilise either the original 'MemAlloc' module or the 'ChangeDynamicArea'
- command. If using a Desktop !Boot file, the setting of System sprites should be some 400K greater than that revealed by the
- Task display. (eg. The Desktop !Boot file on my A5000 starts with System sprites set to 32K, but an examination of the Task
- display shows 160K used; I then calculated that 'Droom' probably required System sprites to be set to (400 + 160 - 32) -
- this has to be rounded to the nearest 32k - ie. 544K.)
-
- Z1. All of these games run too fast on a computer fitted with ARM3. This can be turned off by typing:
- %H2% Cache Off%H2%
- at the command line (accessed by pressing Function key F12); before starting the game. Alternatively, the game's !Run file
- can be appropriately modified - for an example see the !Run file for 'Lander' contained on the RISC-OS 3 Application disc.
-
- Z2. All of these games were originally produced for the pre RISC-OS 2 operating system and include !Boot and/or other files
- which provide an automatic 'auto-configuration' of the computer's memory. Wherever possible, with RISC-OS 3, such files
- should be by-passed and the !Run file modified (or even created) to include either the original 'MemAlloc' module or the
- 'ChangeDynamicArea' command to re-allocate memory.
-
- Z3. All of these games assume that the default disc drive is 0. This can easily be set by typing:
- %H2% Drive 0%H2%
- at the command line (accessed by pressing Function key F12); before starting the game. Alternatively, the game's !Run file
- can be appropriately amended by including the "<Obey$Dir>" command.
-
- Z4. All of these games produce corrupted and/or blank screen displays when used with my Acorn A5000/Taxan 795 combination. An
- easy solution I have found is to change the Desktop mode to one of the standard/'TV' modes (eg. mode 15) - accessed from the
- 'Palette' Desktop icon; attempting to change the mode from within the game's !Run file does not appear to work.
-
